This kit is intended for the quantitative in vitro measurement of tetraiodothyronine (T4) levels in human whole blood, serum, or plasma. The test can be used by medical and healthcare facilities to assist in the evaluation of thyroid function.

Tetraiodothyronine, also known as T4, is one of the two main hormones secreted by the thyroid gland, responsible for regulating metabolism (the other is triiodothyronine, or T3). T4 and T3 are regulated by a feedback system involving the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH, in turn, stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete T3 and T4, which regulate the release of TRH and TSH through a feedback mechanism. Excessive secretion of T4 in the body leads to hyperthyroidism, while its deficiency leads to hypothyroidism. Therefore, T4 is a useful marker in diagnosing hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
