Creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) is one of the isoenzymes of creatine kinase, an enzyme found in various tissues of the body. There are four isoenzymes of creatine kinase: muscle type (MM), brain type (BB), hybrid type (MB), and mitochondrial type (Mimi). The MB type is primarily present in cardiac muscle cells. During a myocardial infarction, creatine kinase levels rise within 6 hours of onset, peak after 24 hours, and then return to normal within 3–4 days. The MB creatine kinase isoenzyme is characterized by high diagnostic specificity, making it one of the key markers of myocardial infarction.
