Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative aerobic bacterium and the causative agent of whooping cough, also known as pertussis. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease transmitted via airborne droplets, spreading especially easily in enclosed group settings such as nurseries, schools, or care homes. Whooping cough is characterized by paroxysmal, debilitating coughing fits that often end with a distinctive whooping inhalation, vomiting, or episodes of apnea, particularly in infants. Early symptoms resemble the common cold—runny nose, low-grade fever, and mild cough—but the illness can progress into prolonged and severe coughing episodes. Complications may include pneumonia, seizures, encephalopathy, and respiratory arrest.
