Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine produced by the immune system in response to injuries and infections. Following a bacterial infection, IL-6 levels rise rapidly and peak after approximately 2 hours, which is earlier than for other cytokines and persists for a long time. The rise in IL-6 levels correlates with the severity of the infection, so it can be used to aid in the early diagnosis of acute infections.
