Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 180,000 that is produced during embryonic development. CEA is found in the intestines, pancreas, and liver of the fetus during the first two months of pregnancy. Elevated CEA levels often indicate cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and medullary thyroid cancer. CEA is a broad-spectrum tumor marker, but it may also be elevated in certain benign conditions, such as benign breast tumors, alcohol-induced cirrhosis, emphysema, collagen diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and nonspecific colitis.
