This kit is intended for the quantitative in vitro measurement of vitamin B12 levels in human serum or plasma. The test is primarily used as an adjunct in the diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, amino acid and fatty acid metabolism, which are required for normal blood formation, cell synthesis, and neurological functions in the human body. Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can occur due to insufficient absorption or intake, can lead to neurological, psychiatric, and hematological disorders. Vitamin B12 deficiency is defined as a serum vitamin B12 level below 148 pmol/L. The main dietary sources of vitamin B12 are meat, fish, shellfish, and dairy products. This deficiency is most commonly observed in populations consuming primarily a vegetarian or vegan diet.
