This kit is intended for the quantitative in vitro measurement of folic acid (vitamin B9) levels in human serum or plasma. The test is primarily used as an adjunct in the diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia.

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for DNA and RNA synthesis, as well as for the metabolism of amino acids, which are necessary for cell division and growth. Folic acid deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia and serious birth defects in the developing fetus, such as neural tube defects. The main dietary sources of folic acid are green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and folic acid-fortified grain products.
